British Standard BS8599-1 first aid kits
BSI kits feature additional and more comprehensive contents to those minimum requirements set out in the L74 Guidance on Regulations. These kits are developed with further items intended to address a wider range of the more common workplace risks.
The BS8599-1 standards establish enhanced minimum first aid kit recommendations that take account of the varying provision levels suitable for the risk category and the number of workers in the assessed workplace.
What size of kit do I need?
In assessing the most appropriate size of kit, consideration should be given to both the level of risk and the number of employees in the workplace. The following table will provide general guidance, whilst actual requirements should be based upon a workplace specific risk assessment.
Low Risk Areas
e.g. Shops, Offices, Libraries
Fewer than 25 Employees: At least 1 small kit
25-100 Employees: At least 1 medium kit
Over 100 Employees: 1 large kit per 100 employees
High Risk Areas
e.g. Light Engineering and Assembly, Food Processing, Warehousing, Working with dangerous machinery
Fewer than 5 Employees: At least 1 small kit
5-25 Employees: At least 1 medium kit
Over 25 Employees: 1 large kit per 25 employees
